Premise
Almost 2 years after a virus wiped out most of the human race, Phil Miller only wishes for some company, but soon gets more than he bargained for when that company shows up in the form of other survivors.
The Pitch
It’s a ridiculous concept. It is. How is this man, Phil Miller, The Last Man on Earth? What happened? How does he survive alone? He goes to stores and grabs all the food he wants free of charge and free of restrictions. He drives whatever car he wants, lives in whatever house he prefers for the moment and has somehow figured out how to do all of this…alone.
I know what you’re thinking: how long can this be funny? Well so far it’s been 14 episodes of funny so you tell me! The nerd in me is more focused on trying to understand why none of this food goes bad, how gas is pumped and water is accessible on and off. I know a show is good because I no longer care about any of those things. They manage to address all of these questions and the answers aren’t great but the show is endearing and hilarious.
Warning: Phil isn’t very likable; it’s almost frustrating what a dick he is, but it works. I find it interesting that viewers love a dickish character in dramas but not in comedies. Don Draper and Roger Sterling were s@#!heads who would sleep with your mother then eat your dinner right in your face. Walter White. Asshat. Tony Soprano. Mean jerk. But in comedies we want the lead character to be our ideal best friend. Even Charlie from Two and a Half Men was only so bad. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t love jerks but I can’t act like they don’t exist. I appreciate a show that’s challenging all of our expectations of a sitcom while still being funny. I’ve read awful reviews of this show basically saying this country is dumb for liking it and even going so far as blaming liberalism. Huh? Now come on!
The show is worth a watch, but it’s not perfect. It’s not even remotely trying to be perfect. I will tell you now you won’t be satisfied with the logic so just allow yourself to let go and laugh!
Episode Homework Assignments
It’s a sitcom but you really do have to watch in order so eps 1-5!!
